HOW TO install Ubuntu 11.10 on nVidia 8200 chipset

Entrada escrita por: patner
This can be a complete how to in installing Ubuntu 11.10 on newest nVidia 8200 chipset. Approach is the same for almost any other hardware but due to the incompatibility some specific concerns can occur.

I had some problems few months ago but the innovative kernel solved this so you won't have to worry about it.

this is the complete list of my personal hardware:

Biostar TF8200+ motherboard
Athlon X2 3600+ CPU
some disks, 3 sata, just one pata
1 pata dvdrw: LG 4163b
SBLive some. 1 soundcard
Chieftec 360W combined fan
DDR2 800MHz Kingmax value 1GB, DDR2 667MHz Patriot valuation RAM

Here we go. Boot from the survive CD. If you get problem reporting some bug you need to flash latest version on the BIOS to your motherboard. To do this, boot to Windows and run BIOS update use that came on CD with your motherboard. Process is rather straightforward but just in case backup the original BIOS document. You can use the same software. There are three options in the BIOS update application so you'll figure it available: )

When Live Ubuntu is working you will have 800x600 decision and since installation takes a bit we need to fix this.

Go to System->Administration->Synaptic package deal Manager. Now click on Settigs->Repositories and select universe and Multiverse repositories.

Click Close then Reload in upper quit corner for these changes to look at effect. Next press CTRL+F and hunt for envy gtk. Of training, install it and and then close Synaptic.

Next look at:

Application->System Tools->EnvyNG. Install modern nVidia drivers:

This proces takes tiny or two so sense free to surf the net to kill some moment. You can simply change to another desktop through holding CTRL+ALT and pushing left or right arrow. that is the great feature to include, use it.

When install is finished TEND NOT TO REBOOT computer. Close EnvyNG and also press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, this are certain to get you to the login screen, just press ENTER IN to login again. Now the resolution could be the way it should be and we are able to proceed with installation.

Click the install icon about the desktop. All the options are straightforward except partitioning on the disk. Select manual here. In Linux you need at least two partitions but MY SPOUSE AND I prefer three. Create new partition of type EXT3 and then for the mount point select /. 15-20GB is OKAY size. This is where Ubuntu and also the applications will be installed. The second partition are going to be of type SWAP, not often covered mount this partition. Its size must be from 512-1024MB (more RAM you might have less SWAP you need). Third partition is good for your documents, photos, motion pictures and similar stuff. it could be EXT3 type and you are able to mount it to /media/documents. for its size you can choose the remainder free space on your disk drive. If you have more than one hard drive watch it's not necessary to reformat wrong partition as well as lose all data about it. For example your disc drive could be /dev/sda or /dev/sdb or /dev/hda. To make sure this install gparted utilizing Synaptic, just like a person used it for installing EnvyNG. When done it ought to be located in System->Administration->Partition manager. In upper right corner you can change between the hard disk drives so I hope this may help to determine to what HDD you intend to install Ubuntu. On previous screen

select at what hard drive you want to install grub. If you no longer know what I'm dealing with just select the disc drive on which you tend to be installing Ubuntu. This can it be. Wait for the process to complete and kill some additional time surfing the web.

When install finish restart laptop computer and boot from the hard drive you installed Ubuntu from. You can select from what hard you happen to be booting by pressing F9 (if you've got some other motherboard it can be some other key) just after computer had restarted. If some question present themselves during startup just select continue. When Ubuntu starts your resolution is going to be messed up again. use the same approach you employed while running Live Ubuntu to correct this (install EnvyNG). If CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE fails (for some reason to do it didn't) restart the computer.

Update the Ubuntu, install applications get and thats it.

PS. my organization is using my sound blaster survive sound card 'cause onboard audio isn't working. It should be sorted by enabling Azalia on ALSA but I don't have learned to do this. Since I wrote this tutorial some time ago it is possible which you wont have this trouble. For more info appear here.

Here is a guide on changing the output from a motherboard sound card towards the PCI sound card. I guess USB version probably should not differ by much however I never tried them.
